What is it about?

The construction of the piston groove seal of a volumetric hybrid energy-converting piston machine is proposed and investigated. A technique of assessing the overall performance of the proposed groove seal is developed and the infl uence of the basic construction and regime parameters on the overall performance of the seal is estimated.

Why is it important?

The creation of a layer of cooling liquid over the piston, the thickness of which decreases in the course of compression and discharge, is one of the effi cient operating regimes of a volumetric hybrid energy-converting piston machine.

Through the use of stepped variation of the gap in the groove piston seal of a hybrid energy-converting piston machine, it becomes possible to achieve a substantial increase in the ratio of mass fl ows from the pumping cavity into the compressor cavity.
