What is it about?
By quantifying the nonlinear relationship between different brain regions we found significant differences in nonlinear functional network connectivity (FNC) between people with schizophrenia and healthy controls, particularly in the visual cortex.

Why is it important?
The brain-mind continuum is a big dataset. Using a method that captures both linear and nonlinear effects in a “boosted” approach, we increased the sensitivity of finding brain group differences compared to a standard linear approach.
Perspectives

The brain-mind dataset is a big dataset characterized by multi-layered complexity as well as multiple temporal and spatial functional co-variates. Non-linear approaches might be better suited than linear methods to model and define the intrinsic complexity of this dataset.
