What is it about?
Accurate detection of patient shift is essential during radiation therapy such that optimal dose is delivered to the tumor while minimizing radiation to surrounding normal tissues. The shift detectability of a newly developed optical surface and thermal tracking system, which was known as ExacTrac Dynamic, was evaluated by comparing its performance with the image guidance under cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).

Why is it important?
Positional accuracy is important for optimal dose delivery to tumor during radiotherapy. Surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT) using real-time optical surface tracking was developed for intra-fractional monitoring of patient positions. One of the newly developed SGRT system with additional thermal mapping ability was evaluated in this study to assess its performance of shift detection against CBCT on phantoms.
