What is it about?

This report shows that three disparate bacteria, group B streptococcus, N. gonorrhoeae, and Enterococcus faecalis, may be detected by the use of this novel assay. Importantly, this paper shows that the assay is much faster than culture, more sensitive than PCR, and allows one to simultaneously identify the pathogen and determine its antimicrobial susceptibility.

Why is it important?

To our knowledge, the ability of a test to simultaneously identify a pathogen and determine its antimicrobial susceptibility has not previously been reported.

Perspectives

This paper serves as a landmark paper for this assay. The importance of this research was recognized recently at the Central Association for Ob/Gyn, in which we were awarded the Judge's Choice Award for our poster presentation.
