What is it about?
This paper investigates how the tissue properties in bone vary locally within bone tissue and show that there is strong spatial heterogeneity of the mineral properties, in particular in zones where different organization motives are merging and create cement lines at their interface.

Why is it important?
The varying mineral properties point towards a fine-grained control during the bone formation process. This also implies that these properties could be a way to tune the mechanical or physiological behavior of the tissue.
Perspectives

“This study shows very clearly the link between the nanoscale and the mineral properties of bone. At the same time, it also unveils the strong local variability of these properties and how advanced, multimodal x-ray tomography techniques will help us to unveil these links for future studies” Tilman Grünewald
