What is it about?

Bismuth vanadate is a semiconductor material that can be used in devices for sun - induced water splitting for the production of hydrogen. We have used a method based on x-rays with synchrotron radiation to study the properties of this material in operational conditions, that is upon the application of an electrical voltage.

Why is it important?

There are two reasons for the importance of this work. First of all, the material studied can be used for sun - induced water splitting, crucially important to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. Secondly, the actual method based on x-rays emitted from the European Synchrotron in Grenoble, France, is highly innovative.

Perspectives

Similar studies will have a real impact in optimizing materials and devices for efficient used of sunlight to reduce carbon emissions.
