Ethics of Non-Professional Translation and Interpreting

What is it about?

This special issue of Translation and Interpreting Studies asked contributing authors to explore the overlap between translatorial ethics and ethos in the context of non-professional translation and interpreting, to more fully define the interplay between ethics models, professional (codes of) ethics, and role definitions in relation to non-professional practitioners, and to interrogate how ethics are instantiated in practice, in training, but also in institutional praxis and policies. The result of their coordinated efforts offers an overview of the ethical models that are gaining prominence in the literature in ITS and in the practice of interpreting and translation, of the values advanced by policies governing service provision and by outreach projects for training non-professionals. Against that background, the interplay between values and role and agency definition is examined and the routes that lie open for research, policy-making, and practices are explored.
