What is it about?

In this chapter I go through "On the Different Methods of Translating" line by line in German and English, providing historical background, noting complexities, and asking questions as a springboard for later discussion.

Why is it important?

Schleiermacher's Academy address on translation is one of the founding documents of modern translation studies, and yet translation scholars have previously only ever analyzed it at article length. It deserves closer scrutiny.

Perspectives

Larisa Cercel asked me to write an article for a bicentennial (2013) essay collection on Schleiermacher's Academy address. I complied with great enthusiasm--and my enthusiasm ran to 22,000 words. She begged me to condense it, and I realized that what I actually had to do was to expand it to book length.
