What is it about?
The different elements of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) Group are tasked to decommission the historical legacy of nuclear materials used in energy production, research and defence. Because of the size, scale and financial investment of decommissioning, the work of the NDA has the potential for significant influences on the overall UK economy through its supply chain and skills development activities. This report investigates this potential at a microeconomic level to learn how the spending on the NDA’s mission generates external benefits to increasing manufacturing capacity, innovation and workforce development.

Why is it important?
With spending by the NDA Group at nearly £4 billion, its activities will have very significant impacts on the economy – particularly in local economies where the decommissioning happens. The results presented here suggest that there is a value beyond the direct spend to achieve the NDA’s mission. Broadening high value manufacturing and investing in a skilled workforce can bring wider benefits to the UK economy in supporting these avenues for economic growth.
