What is it about?

This study highlights some of the main adverse societal impacts of online hate speech on people's lives, notably: a) users' mental health, especially among young people, b) countless cases of suicide and reduced self-esteem, and c) incitement to hate crimes. In addition, the study also addresses the fact that, although the topic of regulating social media may seem taboo and/or sensitive to some people, several countries have not only been openly discussing and addressing the issue but have also been legislating on it.

Why is it important?

The study reveals that the combination of adverse societal impacts of hate speech on social media with international regulatory experiences points to very clear paths for Brazil. Besides, it shows that Brazilian society cannot indefinitely postpone or refrain from fostering this debate.

Perspectives

The expectation is that this study offers significant contribution to the deepening of the necessary reflections and debates around the issue of regulation of social media platforms in Brazil and internationally.
