What is it about?

Results show a reduction in cow stock on big farms in Hungary and small farms in Slovenia, with medium-size farms becoming more important in both countries. Hungary loses more livestock than Slovenia. In Slovenia, cattle clusters are mostly steep grassland and partly cornsilage on small and some medium-sized family farms, whereas in Hungary they are mostly flat with medium- and large-size commercial farms.

Why is it important?

This particular grouping of cows is caused by the size and location of the farms. It can also be linked to the way that agricultural policy measures help cows and dairy farms in less-favored or disadvantaged areas. These areas have land and farms that are typical of Slovenia's mountains and hills.

Perspectives

CAP support may affect farming in "disadvantaged" areas (like Slovenian mountain and hilly farms and partly Hungarian Less Favoured Areas) and the competitiveness of farming in flat areas, which are more common in Hungary but also exist in Slovenia.
