This is a description of how second language pronunciation teaching is changing from a focus on phonological accuracy to a consideration of the importance of intelligibility and the impact of social factors (identity and World Englishes) on pronunciation development.

This paper frames the special issue of TESOL Quarterly, of which I was editor. The special issue is one of the more influential publications on pronunciation during the 2000-2010 decade. This paper, and the special issue, changed the pedagogical and research discussion on pronunciation.
