What is it about?
Piper guineense has been found to be a protect insecticide for the protection of stored cowpeas against infestation by the cowpea bruchid (Callosobruchus maculatus). Acetone extracts made from P. guinnense seed was more potent than ethanol and water extracts in protecting the seeds, suggesting that the bioactive compounds are more soluble in acetone. The combined solvent systems of acetone and ethanol was also quite effective and more potent than ethanol/water system, Combination of more than two solvents was not favorable for the extraction of the potent insecticidal compounds. The results indicate that acetone and acetone/ethanol solvent combinations could be effectively used to extract P. guineense seeds for the protection of cowpea seeds against infestation from C. maculatus.
