What is it about?

(Forthcoming in Educational Action Research) In this case study, we used classroom action-research in order to generate an institutional reflection around active-learning methods in the pedagogy of sustainability and entrepreneurship. In the paper, we review the state of the art of problem-based learning (PBL) in the context of a) sustainability education and b) entrepreneurship education. We designed an international higher education program involving four universities in Brazil and Norway, through a summer school program, we then evaluated the positive aspects of using PBL in sustainability/ entrepreneurship courses. Similarly we identified three tension points in the process of implementing this type of active learning approach.

Why is it important?

Our findings show how can teachers design courses integrating entrepreneurial competences within overal a sustainability course. Furthermore, as result of the project we produced a course, which learning objectives, program and associated activities are shared in an open data repository. We expect this is of great benefit for teachers working in graduate programs.

Perspectives

This was a great project to be working on, which as any other action-research project accounted with great support from several colleagues at my home institution. The best part of this paper was the opportunity to collaborate with four public higher education institutions, which also supported the project. As result, our paper and the course description can be made available to the wider academic community. I think this is good use of tax payers for the benefit of the society as a whole.

This paper is a result of very fruitful collaborations with institutions in Brazil and Norway. The project brought an amazing opportunity not only for scholars but also for master students that attend the course and enjoyed a very intense academic experience.
