What is it about?

Previous studies reveal that means of mass communication play an important role in society, given the fact that the messages conveyed trough them may contribute to create, reinforce, and spread a series of stereotyped social representation of ethnic minority individuals. Therefore, given this overall scenario, the present study develops a longitudinal bibliographic analysis, in the timeframe 1965-2011, regarding Brazilian studies addressing the phenomenon of lack of fairer social representation of Black individuals in means of mass communication.

Why is it important?

The results of the study have shown that, despite the relevance of several marketing studies addressing the issue of lack of social representation, the Brazilian academia has not given the appropriate attention and room to the debate of this subject matter, given the fact that it has been identified a large concentration of studies made by a handful of authors, a few graduate schools and also very few fora that have opened room for their publication with certain degree of regularity.

Perspectives

Considering that the study has focused solely in Brazilian papers, future studies could develop a comparison with a similar approach but exploring international publications and authors. This approach would allow the establishment of a wider view of the state-of-the-art of research in this subject matter.
