What is it about?

It is generally about the overall response of vegetative and reproductive (fruit set, yield and quality) of tomato plants to foliar application of various concentrations of ammonium sulfate, with this aim that less toxicity symptoms could be on tomato rather than root ammonium feeding through nutrient solution.

Why is it important?

Tomato is a very sensitive plants to root ammonium nutrition in hydroponic system, and in high or pure ammonium rates plant can not tolerate ammonium toxicity and generally dies after several days or weeks and very often can not produce any fruits. However with foliar application of ammonium, plant probably can better tolerate ammonium, as presented in this study.

Perspectives

Higher ammonium rates can be applied to plants (through root and foliar feeding), which is a safer form of nitrogen than nitrate which poses some toxicity levels for human and environment. Even with foliar application of ammonium it is possible to improve some quality traits of tomato fruits.
