What is it about?

The paper identifies four major themes in what makes inspirational teaching: knowledge and passion for the subject, understanding how students learn and knowledge is created, offering a constructive and challenging learning environment and seeing students as individuals, partners and colleagues. Rather than focus on teacher practices, we argue that inspirational teaching requires students and teachers working together as partners and having joint responsibilities for developing an environment for inspirational learning.

Why is it important?

Debates about what teaching excellence is and how to measure it continue to dominate in the UK Higher Education sector. Focusing on the learning experience is one way to avoid some of the problems of the term ‘teaching excellence’, which can too often be mired in connections to external, standardised, management targets.

Perspectives

This paper was an opportunity for me to think about teaching and learning in more depth with some experienced colleagues and this is really just one part of a larger conversation.
