What is it about?
We evaluated the frequency of TERT, BRAF, and NRAS mutations in thyroid tumors, lymph node, and distant metastases. Distant metastases show an enrichment in TERTp and a decrease in BRAF mutations. Lymph node metastases have a molecular profile similar to the primary tumor.

Why is it important?
TERT promotor mutations seem to be an important factor for distant metastases. Considering that the genotype of the primary tumor was frequently different from the genotype of corresponding distant metastases, the genotype of the primary tumor may not me suitable to guide targeted therapy.
