What is it about?
The active principles (active substances) present in plants are the ones that give the therapeutic effect. They can be products of primary metabolism (carbohydrate metabolism), results from the photosynthesis process, or products of secondary plant metabolism (nitrogen metabolism).

Why is it important?
The notion of alkaloids is limited to substances with a complex structure, which contain nitrogen, have a basic character, and are products of plants, less often of the animal body; they have a characteristic physiological action, many alkaloids being also strong poisons. There are thousands of alkaloids, which are synthesized from different amino acids or their direct derivatives. They are one of the secondary metabolites and have toxic or strong physiological effects on the body.

An alkaloid is a term used to designate those natural or synthetic substances that, by their chemical nature, alter the functioning of an organ and alter the mental state of a person.
