The article examines how people working with Photoshop have defined and debated what it means to be a user of the application through an analysis of reviews published in magazines and on online forums.

Why is it important?
Its theoretical contribution is that it applies mediation theory to the study of application software in a way that highlights its social and material dimensions. Its methodological contribution is that it studies software reviews, something that few scholars in the field have done.
Perspectives
This is part of a broader project of mine that involves writing the cultural history of Photoshop using a cultural biography approach. While I specifically tackle reviewing Photoshop in this article, I have published many other articles and book chapters that explore other dimensions of Photoshop's fascinating and significant history.
