What is it about?

This article re-conceptualises theories of double-bind to make sense of the experiences of individuals working in the non-profit sector who struggle to respond to competing messages related to the 'doing good' mission of the organisations and the demands to 'do well' in terms of meeting funders priorities.

Why is it important?

As the voluntary sector become increasingly important for the delivery of public services in the UK it is critical that we understand better how the emerging tensions between funding priorities and the social mission of organisations are experienced by people working in these organisations. This paper provides a new and novel way of understanding these tensions by reconceptualising a socially contexted theory of double-bind.
