What is it about?

Formal organization is often seen as the opposite of change or as being resistant to change. Drawing on the concepts of multiplicity and virtuality in the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze, we argue that the reverse is true — that change and organization are imbricated in each other.

This makes organizations inherently dynamic, unstable, and open to continuous contestation and re-creation.

Perspectives

The open-ended and unstable nature of organization shows what is at stake here. It both warns us that just institutions are open to subversion and destruction, and it gives us hope that oppressive and exploitative organizations can be challenged, dismantled and replaced by democratic alternatives.
