What is it about?

This study investigates how children who speak both Cantonese and English develop a new way to talk about finished actions. The kids use the word "already" in a unique way that resembles how certain words in Cantonese mark completion. Interestingly, "already" also seems to take on the roles of several different Cantonese words at once. This shows that when languages come into contact, children might create new language rules that blend elements of the languages they know. This research highlights the incredible adaptability of children when it comes to language. Studying how bilingual children learn can offer valuable insights into how languages change and evolve over time.
