What is it about?
Microglia are central to the brain response to injury and disease. We explored in microglia, the impacts of pharmacological approaches to manipulate the actions of a transcription factor, called p53, on the responses of microglia to a pro-inflammatory challenge. p53 is important in cell death, but we were the first to explore its role in microglia. We found that manipulating microglia with pifithrin, decreased the pro-inflammatory response, involving not only p53, but also the heat shock protein, HSP-70.

Why is it important?
Microglia play roles in brain development, injury and brain health throughout the life. Understanding what controls the responses of these cells to inflammatory stimuli is a rationale approach to the development of drugs to combat changes in the brain driven by microglia. These could be used to treat the negative impacts of microglia such as in traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer's diseases, stroke, and in preterm born infants.
