What is it about?
Certain autoantibodies are caused by citrullination in RA and the source of this post-translational modification of amino acids are thought to be caused by LPS. We investigate possible sources of LPS in the lung, gut or from tobacco products using biomarkers specifically associated with these sources.

Why is it important?
It can help explain how the immune system is triggered to form these autoantibodies that drive the disease and causes the joint destruction
Perspectives
Our idea that microbial leakage of endotoxins via the gut or lung was actually mediated by the results showing that people who use tobacco products as determined by cotinine levels have the highest association with endotoxin, this indicating that LPS in tobacco products may be the main source of endotoxin in our cohort.
