What is it about?
Our research explores a novel approach to improve interactions between humans and robots. We developed a system that helps robots respond politely to people by understanding their intentions. In scenarios where a robot interacts with visitors or customers, our system reduces the mental workload of the human operator. We tested our model with a guardsman robot in a shopping mall, and the results showed a significant decrease in the operator's perceived workload compared to a traditional system. This work contributes to making human-robot interactions smoother and more efficient, particularly in service-oriented environments.

Why is it important?
Our research addresses a critical aspect of human-robot interaction: the ability of robots to communicate politely with users. This is particularly crucial in service-oriented settings where robots interact with people. By developing a system that automates politeness in robot responses, we alleviate the mental burden on human operators, making telepresence tasks more manageable. The uniqueness of our work lies in combining intent recognition and response generation to enhance the quality of communication in a diverse range of scenarios. This research has the potential to revolutionize how robots engage with users, making these interactions more seamless, efficient, and user-friendly.
