What is it about?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT are increasingly used by students to get help in their written assessments. But for them to 'learn' effectively even while using AI, and to understand its opportunities and challenges, learners should 'critically' engage with it. We define what such 'critical interaction' looks like using a framework drawn from theory and empirical student data.

Why is it important?

Developing key skills in future learners helps them flourish. There is a heightened necessity in today’s educational landscape for learners in the age of generative AI (Gen AI) to engage with AI critically, and this paper points educators toward developing those skills.

Perspectives

This is a key step towards defining nuanced levels of our understanding of how learners engage with AI, building on AI literacy, which will be a key skill to acquire for future learners.
