What is it about?

Software development is nowadays even more distributed, leading to the emergence of factors—like the cultural and geographical ones—as undiscussed protagonists in software development communities management. In this paper, we analyzed the impact of such aspects on communication and collaboration activities, using a quantitative—rather than a classical qualitative—approach and representing such social aspects using Community Smells.

Why is it important?

Rather than other studies on the matter that perform mainly a qualitative approach, we adopted a whole quantitative research method. Through this, we provide concrete and practical knowledge that can help managers better manage their teams, consequent increase in the percentage of project success.

Perspectives

I hope this work will be an important step toward the sensibilization of the computer science research community to social aspects of software engineering. Software engineering is a social activity, and deepening such human aspects is essential in order to advance the state of the art and contribute to the practitioners' world.
