What is it about?

We design a passive RF tag embedded inside a contact lens - Smartlens which can be worn on human eyes to detect eye movement. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first system that utilizes the UHF RF signal for eye movement detection. We also increase the communication range of the Smartlens tag from 0.3 m to 1.5 m through hardware design.

Why is it important?

SmartLens is a brandly new method of detecting eye movements. SmartLens is a low-cost and battery-free eye movement sensing system since it only consists of a commercial chip and a customized antenna embedded into the contact lens. SmartLens provides better user experience because it is much more lightweight than the multichannel EOG sensor or the headset and glasses with an embedded sensor. SmartLens can also be combined with existing eye movement detection systems to enable diverse IoT applications.

Perspectives

This article is our first step in exploring new ways to detect eye movements. We investigate the biological impact of tissues on SmartLens's performance. During the design process, we accumulated a lot of tag fabrication experience. In the future, we hope to further enhance the performance of SmarLens. We also hope that interested companies or teams can contact us, we are willing to share all the design details.
