What is it about?

Children with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) present different types of difficulties, among stand out social-emotional reciprocity, communication and social interaction. However, children with these difficulties have the social desire for involvement in relationships with others. The present article analyses the effectiveness of a full-body face-to-face mixed reality system on a total of seventy-two children in promoting social interaction behaviors between a child with ASC and a child without ASC. The results show the potential of the system to foster social interaction behaviors in dyads and in the creation of a non-stressful context of play.

Why is it important?

In contrast to a typical social intervention to promote social interaction behaviors in children with ASC, a full-body face-to-face mixed reality system allows for the development of an active and dynamic environment in which the therapist does not directly influence individuals during the intervention. On the other hand, a face-to-face mixed reality system allows for greater flexibility and a wide range of potential experiences. The findings show how our mixed reality system is as good as a typical social intervention in promoting social interaction behaviors and in creating a non-stressful context of play.

Perspectives

This article aims to increase knowledge to improve the lives of children with ASC as well as to improve the tools used during social intervention sessions by ASC experts. It is not intended to be the only tool for experts. It aims to add one more option to their repertoire in an adaptable and flexible way. It is hoped to create opportunities for children with ASC to fulfill their desires of interacting successfully with other children.
