What is it about?

Real-time VR cloud gaming requires stable and high network bandwidth for optimal playability. However, mobile networks exhibit variable and unstable network conditions. We propose FovOptix, a VR cloud gaming system that combines foveated rendering with foveated video compression. FovOptix associates quality values with bitrate so that the sending bitrate can adapt to the network throughput, enhancing the user experience in limited network conditions. This solution is novel and it facilitates smooth and accessible VR cloud gaming that accommodates players with low-capacity and unstable networks.

Why is it important?

User experience in gaming heavily relies on two key factors: latency and image quality. FovOptix achieves a latency reduction of 3% compared to the Google standard and a significant 100% reduction compared to other solutions. Furthermore, when it comes to visual quality, it achieves the highest among all solutions based on the player region of interest. In the user study, FovOptix achieved the highest playability and gaming scores while minimizing the severity of motion sickness. Thus, FovOptix offers smooth and accessible VR cloud gaming for a broader range of players.

Perspectives

Writing this article was a pleasure since it lays the groundwork for VR cloud gaming. It paved the way for a future where low computational-powered end-user devices can partake in high computational games via cloud servers even with constrained network capabilities.
