What is it about?

Chronic use of dietary supplements containing herbal products has the potential to interfere with the body's absorption, metabolism and elimination of some drugs. Possible effects include enhanced or decreased absorption of orally administered drugs, elevated or diminished blood levels of these drugs, and faster or slower elimination of drugs.

Why is it important?

Lower blood levels and faster elimination of drugs diminishes their efficacy, whereas higher than expected drug blood levels and longer half-lives prolong efficacy and might cause overdose.

Perspectives

Most existing preclinical models of potential drug-botanical interactions overestimate the effects of the botanical dietary supplement, especially when inhibition of drug metabolism is predicted.
