What is it about?

The placement of cochlear-implant processors determines where the microphones are, and the placement of these microphones matters. In this paper, we analyzed the physics of different cochlear-implant microphone placements and how they relate to perception. We found that microphones placed at the ear canal were better than behind the ear microphones for being able to tell left from right.

Why is it important?

Hearing with a cochlear implant is difficult, especially if you’re trying to hear where sounds come from. Something as simple as the placement of the microphones can affect performance, and this paper breaks down the acoustics of why that is.

Perspectives

I hope this paper influences some of the clinical decisions audiologists make. There are some cool takeaways here!
