What is it about?

This paper presents the neuroscientific evidence of the benefits of music for children's development. We discuss different types of benefits (language, attention, etc) and different uses of music (instrument training, playing in a band, singing, playing at home). We are also critical towards some studies in the field and present some suggestions for future studies.

Why is it important?

We should not ignore the benefits of music since it is a powerful tool in helping all children. It is especially important for children who suffer from cognitive or linguistic problems or are hearing impaired.

Perspectives

I am a big spokesperson for using music in schools, kindergartens and for example in therapy. But I want all of this to be based on scientific evidence. For this reason I feel that it is important to view the literature critically and to try to refine the findings. Everybody deserves to be involved with musical activities of their own liking.
