Why is it important?

It had been recorded for many years ago that antioxidantsare considered an essential stone for helping organisms toovercome the oxidative stresses caused by free radicals. Freeradicals are categorized as chemical species that contain oneor more unpaired electrons which make them unstable andcause damage to other molecules by extracting electrons fromthese molecules to attain stability. Oxidative stress is amongthe major causative factors in induction of many chronic anddegenerative diseases, including atherosclerosis, ischemicheart disease, ageing, diabetes mellitus, cancer, immune sup-pression, neurodegenerative diseases. In fact, the search for possible newsources of antioxidants has become important in the last fewyear s. These antio xidant new sourc es could be used for directconsumption or as food supplements for increasing the foodnutritional values. Fo rtunately, medicinal plants used in thetraditional medicine and healing are one of these sour ces ofantio xidants. It is highly appreciable that these remediesha ve no side effects and are absolutely inexpensive. Home rem-edy treatment deals with day-to-day problems, like cough andcol d, headache, vom iting, stomach upset, etc. Home re medytreatme nt makes use of things besto wed on us b y nature likefruits, vegetables, herbs, etc. Our resear ch target was conc ernedwith studying the ability of our en vir onmentally surroundingmedicinal plants lik e myrrh as new sour ce not only for treat-ment of simple diseases like cough, cold and headache but alsofor the treatment of one of the most complicated diseases allov er the world like c olon cancer. In addition, this plant extractcould be easily consumed alone or added to food stuff as natu-ral agents and dietary supplements.

Perspectives

Myrrh can be used as a functional and therapeutic food and its extract could be added to milk, yogurt and traditional meals which may help in protecting the human from colon cancer. In addition, the results obtained from this study prove that myrrh is a strong antioxidant that has strong scavenging activity against free radicals.
