What is it about?

We assessed levels and patterns of alcohol consumption in 510 pregnant women using a Retrospective Diary. We asked about alcohol intake before the woman was pregnant (or before she knew she was pregnancy), and about drinking during the middle part of pregnancy.

Why is it important?

The levels of alcohol consumption we identified, especially for the time around conception or before the pregnancy was known about, suggest that there are more alcohol-exposed pregnancies than previously realised. It’s important not only to ask how much women drink, but what they drink and when. Identifying patterns as well as levels of consumption should be helpful in working out strategies for reducing consumption at these critical times.

Perspectives

Alcohol consumption patterns varied widely, but our Retrospective Diary approach helped to identify those most likely to continue drinking during pregnancy. This kind of detail is important when working out how to address the problem.
