What is it about?
In this review, we discuss the functions of and the metabolic pathways linked to the mitochondrial complex III, which is a key mitochondrial respiratory enzyme complex, and the electron carrier coenzyme Q (ubiquinone), which is reoxidized by CIII.

Why is it important?
Mutations that compromise CIII function or coenzyme Q biosynthesis cause severe genetic diseases (mitochondrial diseases) in humans. These diseases are mostly untreatable and the underlying mechanisms poorly known, hindering development of therapies.
