What is it about?

A robot should be able to give a hand in the kitchen, to be a valuable assistant in a household. Many of the food ingredients in packages have attractive textures, which makes them easy to recognize. Yet, natural food like a tomato have no clear texture and should be recognized based on shape and colour.

Why is it important?

With a society where the population is getting older, it is important that people get the support to live as long as possible in their own household. Robots can come to an aid here, but to do this they should be able to distinguish all the ingredients that could be found in a kitchen. Recognizing an ingredient as a tomato is a first step.

Perspectives

This is a typical example of what makes robotics interesting. It describes a simple problem (for humans) that everybody understands, combines a number of techniques from artificial intelligence that are well known, but requires still some hard work to integrate them in a working solution.
