What is it about?

There is general agreement that the data created by researchers needs to be looked after better. It's often cost a lot of money to produce and could be useful to future researchers. So research organisations like universities are establishing services to support researchers manage their data better. This paper considers how complex the challenge of supporting research data management really is, using the concept of a "wicked problem". Wicked problems are non-standard problems that are very complex and hard to solve. Is RDM a wicked problem?

Why is it important?

If we are supporting researchers to improve the management of research data, then we need to understand challenges involved. If RDM is "wicked" then our strategies will be different.

Perspectives

I love the concept of wicked problems as a way of thinking about the different types of challenge we face in professional life.
