What is it about?
This study looks at what helps wineries adopt eco-friendly innovations, both from inside the business (like the size and education of the management team) and from outside (such as networking with other organizations). The researchers surveyed 234 Hungarian wineries between June 2022 and January 2023, examining how they use different types of innovations, including marketing, processes, and products. The study found two main groups of wineries: one that is more innovative and another that lags behind. Marketing and process improvements were more common than changes in products or organization. The researchers highlight that the characteristics of the managers, such as their age and education, play a big role in driving innovation. The study also points out the importance of knowledge sharing within wineries and building partnerships with universities and other organizations to boost innovation. Smaller wineries, which often struggle with innovation, could benefit from more support, like grants or tax breaks, to help them adopt sustainable practices. Overall, the study shows that networking and the commitment of management are key factors for eco-innovation in the Hungarian wine industry.

Why is it important?
This research is unique because it focuses specifically on eco-innovation within the Hungarian wine industry, a sector that has not been extensively studied in terms of sustainability practices. Most eco-innovation studies focus on larger industries or regions with well-established innovation ecosystems, while this study sheds light on a niche sector dominated by micro and small businesses, which often face unique challenges.
