What is it about?

This paper looks at the current challenges within the UK public sector and seeks to demonstrate that the use of Lean Six Sigma is already making a difference to how efficient and effective services can be. It also argues that the use of Lean Six Sigma is fragmented but individual examples show its applicability and how a systematic approach could provide real opportunities for the future.

Why is it important?

Since the global financial crisis, the public sector has faced significant budget challenges and has need to explore the way in which services are delivered. Lean Six Sigma can provide a platform for not only an efficient and effective service but it is argued can also be used to enhance the quality of service to the public.

Perspectives

The public sector faces significant financial challenges which mean that new approaches to delivering efficient and effective services need to be explored. Beyond this however is a need to work in more integrated ways with partners and communities. Lean Six SIgma includes a wide range of tools that can help stimulate the debate on new ways of working and has an approach that includes all voices within an organisation and emphasises the need to listen to the public in designing and delivering services
