What is it about?
Innovations are key for the present and the future, but it is crucial to understand consumers’ position on this matter. Based on text data mining, 7030 tweets were collected and sorted into 14 different food-related topics of which six categories were positive, five were negative and three were neutral. In a sector that needs to satisfy a fast-increasing population, advancements like cultivated meat and bio-circular economy are key to sustain the industry and the society. Most food technologies are seen positively by Twitter users, such as innovative solutions and sustainable agriculture, while others, like virtual dimensions of the industry or crisis-related scenarios, have a negative interpretation by consumers. It is remarkable how many topics have a neutral sentiment, which gives ground to improve in a privileged position, just before consumers’ have a negative opinion and it is more complicated to change their minds. Technological innovations are becoming predominant in the food industry and the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has made the sector improve even faster. Traditional methods needed to be substituted and technologies such as robots, Artificial Intelligence, blockchain and genetics have arisen to stay.
