What is it about?

Greening or HuaLongBing, aka "amarelão do citrus", is a serious, incurable disease attacking citrus trees. It clogs the circulatory system affecting tree growth and fruit quality. We have measured some key physiological features of citrus trees suffering from greening disease symptoms, to determine how the disease progresses, and which are some features that render different breeds more resistant to the disease progression.

Why is it important?

For decades, no citrus breeds were considered resistant to the implacable disease. Greening is destroying citrus production around the world, having already ruined the economy of small countries like Bhutan. This study described key features in physiological resistance against the disease, and proposes factors that could be used to diagnose sick plants more quickly. We believe it is an important contribution to prevent the spread of citrus greening.

Perspectives

We expect the presented results to facilitate the identification and perhaps "engeneering" of greening-resistant breeds. As soon as this disease is finally kept at bay, a significant economic relapse may ensue.
