What is it about?

The chapter is about the current shape and future potential of Chinese music studies--the discipline (or interdisciplinary meeting point) where we share research on the music and musical culture of China and Chinese diasporic populations. It concludes the Oxford Handbook of Music in China and the Chinese Diaspora: https://global.oup.com/academic/product/the-oxford-handbook-of-music-in-china-and-the-chinese-diaspora-9780190661960?cc=us&lang=en#

Why is it important?

Chinese music is increasingly significant globally, and a crucial means of understanding the values and histories of Chinese society. Research on this topic occurs across multiple disciplines and languages. This chapter aims to draw out common points that can be used to strengthen the coherence of this diverse and variegated set of disciplines, as well as identify topics that would repay in-depth study.

Perspectives

The book where this chapter appears was a huge project to pull together. I learnt a lot from it. The best part was editing the chapters from the various contributors to try to help them put across their new research insights as smoothly as possible. Overall, we achieved a systematic contribution that shows the subject area in new light--I hope fellow researchers are inspired by it!
