What is it about?

The article is about extraction of astaxanthin from six species of shrimp carapace using conventional extraction method (chemical extraction) and an advanced technology (High Pressure Processing). This technology is the first study about HPP application in extracting bioactive compound in Malaysia. The author compared the yield of astaxanthin of both extraction methods, analyzed by HPLC and succesfull in getting the single peak of astaxanthin without purification additional technique.

Why is it important?

HPP is the first study of extracting bioactive compound (astaxanthin) in Malaysia. It is an advanced technology with excellent properties resulted of extracted compound and great technique to applied due to shorter time, provide high stability and environmental friendly.

Perspectives

Doing research in this field and using this advanced technology challenged me to be extra careful in order to get excellent results. Working with very limited resources since it is a new technology especially extraction of astaxanthin led me to do a lot of trials and errors. I hope this article can help others to do research of astaxanthin from other species of astaxanthin or sources since it is a powerful antioxidant.
