What is it about?
The need for case-based research on social media topics is evident. In this editorial preface, I have examined research questions related to three social media applications: 1) wielding of democratic power; 2) medicine; and 3) uses inside the organization. In the process, I’ve touched on some other areas that could be subjects in their own right. For example, wielding democratic power is really just one subject area in the broader topic of the use of social media in politics. A related area of research is the interplay between social and mass media outlets. Medicine is just one professional trade, but case research is also needed in the fields of law, education, and the performing arts. Finally, while I have focused on social media inside the organization, cross organizational applications of social media are equally interesting and in need of exploration.

Why is it important?
Case-based research on social media topics is lacking, especially in information systems and technology journals. This editorial expresses the need for more research in this area and identifies specific areas of high potential.
