What is it about?

When people go from being one member of staff to getting the responsibility of e.g. a course, program or project, it is not always obvious how this process involves development of a new role: that of educational leadership. This paper is an exploration of what it means to become an educational leader in medical education and offers a framework for important aspects included in developing educational leadership, rather than just taking on the administrative role of managing a course.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that educational leadership involves a process involving four dimensions: leading development, enabling learning, creating a learning environment and creating bridges and networks. Thus, educational leadership is made explicit as an approach to an academic role which too often has been viewed as purely administrative.

Perspectives

In my role of working with educational development in higher education I have in this article systematically explored educational leadership as a way to better understand and improve how we can support educational leaders.
