What is it about?

We found that children's ability to learn the spelling of new words was associated with their ability to read known words. By contrast, we found that children's ability to learn the meaning of new words was associated with their ability to understand texts.

Why is it important?

Several factors can influence children's ability to read. Knowing that learning about new words is important for reading can guide the development of intervention programs for children who struggle with reading.

Perspectives

I did this research as part of my postdoctoral fellowship at Dalhousie University. Our findings got me particularly interested in children's ability to learn as opposed to their acquired knowledge.
