What is it about?

This article examined the breadth of studies in the area of multi-sensory environments in settings such as mental health facilities, education, special education and in care facilities for people with dementia. It helps make sense of the research in this field and is useful not just for academics but for organisations wanting to understand the effects of multi-sensory environments for different population groups.

Why is it important?

A relatively small body of research has been conducted over the past decade in settings where MSEs are implemented and the types of studies conducted have been diverse. Therefore it can be challenging to determine how effective are for different population groups. This study examined evidence across a range of settings and population groups to help understand the "bigger picture" about the effectiveness or limitations of MSEs.

Perspectives

I hope readers will feel more informed and that they have gained both an understanding of MSEs and an awareness of "where" current research is. By providing an overview of the whole field, I hope this article will also be useful to organisations looking to plan and create a MSE. Additionally this article may help other researchers as they plan, conduct and report research in this area.
