What is it about?
There has been much use of the term ‘agile’ in relation to a variety of working practices. This article examines the various strands of literature that use this term and reveals that there are six distinct types. Of these, the article goes on to explore one of these -identified as the most widely recognised by practitioner audiences- and then considers the implications for workers and also for the HR function in organisation, who may find themselves out of the loop for some key aspects of agile working.

Why is it important?
Agile has been more widely used since Covid (e.g. homeworking). Agile may also bypass HR, leaving organisations unclear as to who should coordinate aspects of work for some categories of worker (e.g. duty of care and wellbeing)
